Creating a new park at Worlds End Gorge

A new nation­al park is being cre­at­ed in Worlds End Gorge, near Bur­ra in the state’s Mid North.

A 1000 hectare block of land is being gift­ed to the Depart­ment for Envi­ron­ment and Water by Neoen Aus­tralia as part of its near­by Goy­der Wind Farm project. 

The trans­fer of land inte­grates Neoen’s com­mit­ment to deliv­er­ing an envi­ron­men­tal off­set with the devel­op­ment of a new nation­al park. This is an inno­v­a­tive approach that paves the way for the eco­log­i­cal­ly sig­nif­i­cant site to be per­ma­nent­ly pro­tect­ed and restored. 

The cre­ation of a new nation­al park will also pro­vide more oppor­tu­ni­ties for the local com­mu­ni­ty to get out­doors and expe­ri­ence nature. 

Where will the new park be located?

The pro­posed nation­al park is locat­ed approx­i­mate­ly 2 hour’s dri­ve north east of Ade­laide, or about 20 kilo­me­tres south of Bur­ra. The land being trans­ferred bor­ders Hop­kins Creek Con­ser­va­tion Park and pop­u­lar camp­sites run by the Region­al Coun­cil of Goyder.

Why cre­ate a new park?

The land includes per­ma­nent water­holes, habi­tat for threat­ened species, and a scenic gorge with euca­lyp­tus wood­lands. The pre­vi­ous own­ers of the land did a great job restrict­ing stock and man­ag­ing weeds on this site, which has helped retain its sig­nif­i­cant envi­ron­men­tal value. 

What are the next steps?

To ensure the local com­mu­ni­ty is involved in this new park from the out­set, Nation­al Parks and Wildlife Ser­vice SA will be devel­op­ing a com­mu­ni­ty ref­er­ence group with rep­re­sen­ta­tives from Neoen, CFS, adjoin­ing landown­ers, local vol­un­teers, the Region­al Coun­cil of Goy­der, the Ngad­juri peo­ple, and oth­er impor­tant stakeholders.

This group will be involved in an ini­tial plan­ning process to help shape the new nation­al park and how it fits in the sur­round­ing land­scape. This includes con­sid­er­ing new vis­i­tor facil­i­ties, such as walk­ing trails and look­outs. The broad­er com­mu­ni­ty will also have an oppor­tu­ni­ty to get involved in plan­ning the park, with the devel­op­ment of a park man­age­ment plan once the park is established.

DEW will also be inves­ti­gat­ing oppor­tu­ni­ties to co-name the new park in con­sul­ta­tion with the Ngad­juri Nation Abo­rig­i­nal Corporation.
