Creating a new park at Worlds End Gorge

A new national park is being created in Worlds End Gorge, near Burra in the state’s Mid North.

A 1000 hectare block of land is being gifted to the Department for Environment and Water by Neoen Australia as part of its nearby Goyder Wind Farm project.

The transfer of land integrates Neoen’s commitment to delivering an environmental offset with the development of a new national park. This is an innovative approach that paves the way for the ecologically significant site to be permanently protected and restored.

The creation of a new national park will also provide more opportunities for the local community to get outdoors and experience nature.

Where will the new park be located?

The proposed national park is located approximately 2 hour’s drive north east of Adelaide, or about 20 kilometres south of Burra. The land being transferred borders Hopkins Creek Conservation Park and popular campsites run by the Regional Council of Goyder.

Why create a new park?

The land includes permanent waterholes, habitat for threatened species, and a scenic gorge with eucalyptus woodlands. The previous owners of the land did a great job restricting stock and managing weeds on this site, which has helped retain its significant environmental value.

What are the next steps?

To ensure the local community is involved in this new park from the outset, National Parks and Wildlife Service SA will be developing a community reference group with representatives from Neoen, CFS, adjoining landowners, local volunteers, the Regional Council of Goyder, the Ngadjuri people, and other important stakeholders.

This group will be involved in an initial planning process to help shape the new national park and how it fits in the surrounding landscape. This includes considering new visitor facilities, such as walking trails and lookouts. The broader community will also have an opportunity to get involved in planning the park, with the development of a park management plan once the park is established.

DEW will also be investigating opportunities to co-name the new park in consultation with the Ngadjuri Nation Aboriginal Corporation.
